Spring Graduation is on the horizon and while it’s no secret that seniors have a lot to balance during their last few months of college, starting your job search shouldn’t be put on the back burner. Why? Companies are hiring now and many have limited spots to secure, so waiting too long can make the already difficult job search that much harder. To help, I’ve put together some tips that will make your search easier and more enjoyable. So what do you need to do? Simple. Attend your schools career fair!

Campuses are holding these events now and you don’t want to miss them. Some schools even hold specialized career fairs for specific majors, colleges, etc. Career fairs can open your eyes to a number of opportunities you didn’t know existed. Companies you already love, companies you didn’t know hired for your skillset and companies you’ve never heard of before will all be in attendance. Ask yourself this, when are you ever going to have the chance again to be in an entire room full of employers seeking college students before you graduate? In most cases, never. So at the very least, show up in your business attire with resume in hand to see what opportunities are out there.

However, to really seize the moment and take advantage of the opportunities in front of you, introduce yourself to as many companies as possible. Ask what roles they’re hiring for and what they look for in prospective employees. Think of these conversations as mini-interviews, but don’t let that scare you. As we all know “practice makes perfect” and the more you speak with prospective employers the more comfortable you will become. Take it one step further and do your research ahead of time. Get a complete list of employers who will be attending the event from your career center and put a star next to all the companies you’d like to speak with. This won’t take long and will help you identify companies you want to talk to. Once you arrive, don’t limit yourself to these organizations. Instead, talk to others first as more of a warm up and who knows, you could end up finding something that really excites you. You’ve got nothing to lose so keep an open mind. If nothing else, you will feel more prepared and (most importantly!) more confident when you speak to the companies you identified.

Next, be prepared to talk about yourself by giving a short and sweet synopsis of who you are. Think beyond just your major and the job title you’re seeking. While those are important areas to bring up, giving the employer a glimpse beyond that will help set you apart. Where are you from? Do you have siblings? What are your hobbies? What organizations have you been a part of? Have you held leadership roles? These are the types of questions that will help you stand out and be memorable. Plus, often times these topics can put you at ease because you’re so well versed in them.

Before you leave the booth, grab a business card, more information and ask what the next steps are. After the event, ask yourself which organizations impressed you and follow up with those companies. Always remember that an interview goes both ways. In the end, it equally needs to be as good of a match for the company as the employee to work out. This should give you confidence.

Last but not least, don’t forget to have fun! A student who is smiling and enjoying themselves is going to exude confidence and be much more approachable than one that is not. This is a great way to kick off your job search and I promise it will be much easier and way more fun that scouring the internet looking for jobs often times requiring years of experience.
